nerd apologist

For those of you feel that my previous post was boring and pedestrian, let me remind you that I use this space to say things that are in my head or things that I particuarly want to voice. I voice them here because sometimes the grimaces that form on other people’s faces as I talk to them about nerdy tech stuff becomes too much for even I, the Sultan of Stoicism of, to withstand.

[Stream of consicousness alert]. Let’s play a game! Game Objective: Think of as many alternatives to the Sultan of Stoicism as possible without using a thesaurus. Here we go:

  • King Coldheart
  • Lord of Listless
  • Prince of Passivity [courtesy of min]
  • The Head of Heedlessness [min]
  • The Adjudicator of Aloofness [min]
  • Emperor of Apathy [steph]
  • Shogun of Shrug [-d]
  • Nabob of Not-giving-a-shit [-d] *My favorite so far

Anyone think of anymore? Send ‘em in. And be creative.

nerd shopping

I am a firm believer in splurging on items that affect your daily life. I use my computer constantly (surprise!), so I can justify certain luxuries. All this attention is paid to how many gigahertz your computer clocks at, when a much more important issue lies is the comfort of my constant usage. Having a nice LCD or two is perfectly all right, since I stare at monitors several hours a day. Eye strain can be deadly, y’know.

Also very important are input devices. Ergonomic mice and keyboard with a touch of wireless for that delicious flexibility and mobility. Wee! I already have this msft wireless blue mouse. I’m looking to get a wireless keyboard, but most of these damn companies only sell them in a bundle with a wireless mouse. I also wanted that ergonomic split-key, because it’s groovy and I like to frustrate other people that try to use my computer.

The only keyboards that meet said criteria are the Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop Pro and the Logitech Cordless Comfort Duo [hot picture]. The tie-breaker: the Logitech mouse is designed solely for the right hand. =P Those blasted rightists. I guess I’m going to pick up this msft bundle. Anyone else know of any good wireless keyboards?

Oh yeah, and to shop around online, I used Google’s nifty new shopper search engine: Froogle. It helped me find this deal at buy.com.

maybe she knows kung fu

Harriet Klausner is Amazon’s #1 Reviewer. This chick has reviewed over 4600 books = O. No, you should be shocked. It is indeed absolutely ridicilious. How does one read and review 4600 books in the course of several years? Well, basically, you have to be a reading monster. Yowzer. And I used to tease Mags for reading too fast. This Klausner woman inhales books

To be honest, I am actually a bit jealous. Imagine having at your disposal the ability to ingest a book a day! I mean, everyone dreams of an advanced knowledge-input system. It’s why we wish we could jack our brains into a computer and just download all the knowledge we want. Man. I gotta start reading books again.

keepin it real

Look! Jin Tha MC has a xanga site [via cici]. I guess he’s staying true to his Asian American roots??? Looks like he’s going to hit mainstream soon. He has an album coming out and he’s featured in the sequel to The Fast and The Furious. sigh, I really wish the first asian rapper to break into the mainstream would be someone I could endorse. Come on now. A Ruff Ryder? Ugh, the thuggy asians will eat him up.

tales from the home front

I have been spending spring break in New Jersey, domestic style . So much for the naked drunken revelry typical of my peers. Maybe I will drown my regrets in sales receipts.

I was at the mall and I saw this store display advertising muscle tees. On the advert, there were two hunky men wearing muscles tees, flanked by several young woman looking very pleased with themselves. I thought about buying a muscle tee, but then I realized that I was supposed to supply the muscles. I guess I should consider myself lucky to have shoulders broad enough to fake it.

tale of two jons

Meet jwl and jltse. jwl is a computer science major in the College. jltse is a computer engineering major in the Engineering School. The following is a screenshot taken from my Xanga subscription page, a Xanga feature that lets you easily track your friends’ xangas by bringing together all recents posts onto a single page for you.

Anyway, I came upon the following juxtaposition of xanga entries, independently posted one hour of each other, on Sunday of midterm week. I hearby submit it as the definitive example of the difference between the lives of CC students and the lives [read: plight] of SEAS students.

rough ride

Damn. The beginning of midterm week is the worst possible time to run out of laundry. This is going to be a rough week for me and the boys.

a morning poem to the sun

Turn away, o’ nefarious orb!

Shining and beaming, you have tried

But, whether sunny or glum this weather be

I’d rather still stand by my studies’ side

Your warm kisses and tendrils of light

seduce me not, for I am resolved and firm

Your blue skies may make me forsake my sight

But ne’er was I more ready to see dark and still learn

So go away, nice weather, I’m trying to study here.

And you too, blog, stop distracting me!

I’d write a poem about that as well,

but that would be a contradiction.

of the strange proportions.

I realize that last verse was much rushed.

But I really have to return to my studies, hush.

it speaks truth

When double-checking and re-reading my last post, I tripped up on as I came upon the last paragraph. At first glance, I could have sworn it said: “…my counter tells me that I get a lot of chicks…”

If only all webpage counters were so prescient.

xanga’s daddy

While strolling through Joel on Software’s new New Yorkers forum, I noticed a post from Monsur. Monsur is a software developer living in NYC (ah me, there are so few of us), but you wouldn’t know it from his site. He writes more about great music and great movies than about programming or anything else for that matter. Good reading.

Anyway, the interesting bit is that Monsur also happens to be one of the main guys behind Xanga It turns out that Xanga is not some lame mega-corp blogging tool, but rather it’s a gently nurtured blogging tool built by four guys (Marc, John, Monsur, and Dan) in a garage somewhere. Who woulda thunk it. More respect goes to Xanga.

In completely unrelated news, my counter tells me that I get a lot of clicks from people googling for information about Jack Chen. I noticed that if you search Google for xanga website, my previous post about Jack Chen is the third hit, with Jack Chen’s xanga site itself being the top hit. Google sure has a funky search algorithm.

don’t look at me

a picture of colin farrell Colin Farrell stole my patented “charmingly confused” look. That bastard.

In other news, I have been busy with lots of work. But you realized this, because you see the sparse-ness for yourself. My apologies for such.

Oh yeah, it took me 40 minutes to figure out how to float the above picture to the left, and not have all the other posts wrapped around and messy looking weirdness bleh. The solution was to put a clear property on the bottom bar. Oh, I am a fast-becoming a CSS guru. I wonder if W3C has summer internships.

Anyway, you can easily see what my work piles up. Because I spend 40 minutes on a Thursday night hacking my webpages.

Wow, March already. Personally, I prefer walking in an arrhythmic manner.

Sometimes I go to bed because I just don’t want to be awake anymore.
