review: “Starlings” – Elbow

I am listening to this song ‘Starlings’ by Elbow over and over again. A sonic wall introduces the song, then it crashes down and jars your vision, and a man with a wry twang in his voice sings poetry.

You are the only the thing in any room you’re ever in
I’m stubborn selfish and too old

I wonder if musicians, poets, artists appreciate what a privilege it is to have the talent to create. All people experience pain and joy, but arguably only the artists can channel it into art, all tangible and full of affect.  The shit that would burn up other people’s lives is, instead, the grist for a career in the arts.   My own emotions are useless and good only for the purchase of a sulk and pout.  Oh, to get sad and write this:

I sat you down and told you how
the truest love that’s ever found
Is for oneself
You pulled apart my theory
With a weary and disinterested sigh

I have never thought to accuse a song of having superior meter, until now.

So yes I guess I’m asking you
To back a horse that’s good for glue

I’ve heard enough songs by the heartbroken.  When does the heartbreaker ever pick up a guitar?  Is there no muse for the beau who cut you loose? Did he want something else and try to save us all the hell that’s come about, anyway?  How heavy do your tears weigh upon his heart, my dear?   We’ll never know.

Asia travelogue: deleted scenes

To those readers that enjoyed the recent Asia Travelogue: a bonus look behind the scenes.  To create this dense morsel of  literature, my editor Catherine  thought it necessary to cut some juicy tidbits.  These stories did not make the cut:

  1. The Dark Alley Where Bad Things Happen (Phnom Penh, Cambodia)
  2. Story in which B Fails to Seduce Pretty Girl (Bali, Indonesia)
  3. 400 McNuggets Delivered Pool-side for Revelers, Wedding Party (Bai, Indonesia)
  4. Lulz Tries a “New Fruit”; Discovers Coconut Painted Purple, Scam (Lijiang, China)
  5. Lulz Believes an Artist’s Cat Was In Fact One Responsible for Paintings (Lijiang, China)
  6. Police Officer Performs ID-Check, Double Take on My Driver’s License at Night Club (Hong Kong)
  7. Uncle Takes Me to Massage Parlor (Guangzhou, China)

bye bye conan

In case you blinked, this week is Conan O’ Brien’s last week at Late Night.  He’s actually closing the NY studio and moving to LA (!!). All week, he’s airing favorite clips from his 16 year run.  I hope the self-deprecation and surreal alt-humor survive the move.

Smoking Allowed

Yknow, I’ve been going back and annotating the old travelogue posts with hyperlinks to flickr photos as they go up.  Upon review, the hyperlink is a bit distracting, innit?  Dilutes the strength of my prose.

Video: Glowing Cities Under a Nighttime Sky.  Nighttime time lapse footage from an airplane.  Hypnotic.

Video:  T-Mobile Dance invades Liverpool train station.  well-built.

There is something about the grit and dirt in this picture that I love.

It’s pretty amazing how quickly the blogging dried up as soon I returned to New York. Even some of my residual posts from Asia are quickly turning stale. Perhaps this is a clarion call for a change in scenery, although I am uneasy about what sort of posts may emerge from New Jersey.
